Sega Pinball was created when Data East was acquired by Sega. This was in the mid to late 1990s when pinball manufacturers were in the process of closing their doors. By 1997 there wer only two pinball machine manufacturers left, Sega Pinball and Williams.
Sega sold their pinball division to Gary Stern who called the company Stern Pinball.
